Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus discovered in 1947 at the Zika forest, Uganda. Between 1952 and 1988 approximately 30 papers were published about Zika demonstrating that this virus caused mild symptoms in humans and monkeys, but could be lethal for mice. Since there was no significant disease documented in humans, just a few papers had been published before 2014. This scenario changed in 2013-2014, with an outbreak well-documented in French Polynesia, and this time there was association with the Guillain-Barr syndrome. Shortly after that, in the beginning of 2015, the virus was detected in Brazil for the first time, and by the end of 2015 it was suggested that it was associated with the innumerous cases of microcephaly in newborns in Brazil. In February 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika infection as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Since then, more than one thousand papers have been published. The animal models have demonstrated the association between Zika virus and microcephaly, and the in vitro experimental results published up to this date are focusing on understanding a few questions: how Zika virus infects the cells, which cells are the targets, the differences between the strains (African and Asian), how the immune system respond to the infection, drug screening and possible pathways, which could be targeted to eliminate the virus, and understanding the modes of transmission, especially the mother-fetus transmission. All these studies came to some answers to these questions, but in the same time, generated new questions. Special attention for the general community is the sexual transmitted nature, now a well-described mode of transmission. Zika virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitos Aedes. ssp (mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) and it has been documented that in this summer the virus have reached Florida. The main goal of this book is to provide the most up-to-date information for students, medical students and scientists on Zika virus and its associated diseases. This book will include all the information related to Zika virus since its discovery in 1947, its epidemic outbreak in 2007-2014, how the epidemiology changed in America in 2015-2016, mode of transmission, prevention, and treatment of Zika virus infection and associated diseases. Within the last 8 months, the scientific community has received more than one thousand papers published on PubMed. This makes it difficult to keep track of everything that is newly discovered, making this book a comprehensive source of information on the topic.
